Children of Light – Taken from Pastor Starr’s Sermon Series, “Who Am I”

Have you ever found yourself as a Christian somewhere you did not belong? Maybe you have attended a party that turned bad, or you have found yourself in the midst of a group of people using filthy language, or you have attended a a family gathering where you are quite uncomfortable with the atmosphere due to the music, the language, the liquor, and maybe other things.

What is it that makes us this way – It is the truth found in Scripture that we are “children of light.”

John 8:12 (KJV)
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

A person can only walk in light as he follows Jesus Christ. If you have Christ, you have the light of life. Without Christ in a person’s life, he can only walk in darkness. If you are wondering aimlessly in life, without direction, without hope, without purpose, or fulfillment, then I encourage you to place your faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ on the cross. He is the light you need in your life.

1 Thessalonians 5:5-11 (KJV)
5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

As children of light, we are to watch and be sober for the return of Jesus Christ. Many today sleep regarding the return of Christ. Some deny it. Some never think of the return of Christ. Many today are consumed and caught up with the everyday cares of this world. But as children of light, believers are given the charge to watch and be sober. Why? Because Christ could return today. How do you wake up each day? Do you live in the reality that Jesus Christ could come back today?

Ephesians 5:8
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

As children of light, we are to walk as children of light. Walk implies a continuous action. Clearly, God expects the life of a Christian to be different, to reflect the light of Christ. While, watching deals with our alertness to Christ’s return, walking deals with our activity in the midst of darkness. As a child of the light, one’s lifestyle and lips ought to reprove the darkness around him.

Ephesians 5:11-13
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

If you are a believer in Christ, your life work is to be a light that watches for the return of Christ, and a light that walks in a way that reproves and reveals darkness around you. Therefore, as Christians, let us not be passive and silent, but rather active and bold to shine forth the light of life – Jesus Christ to others.

Matthew 5:16
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
