The key to growth in the Christian life is the knowledge of Christ.
God’s plan for the Christian is to become more and more like Jesus Christ. In 2 Peter 3:18, the exhortation is given to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 3:18 (KJV)
18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
This grace believers are to grow in is defined in Titus 2:9-11.
Titus 2:12 (KJV)
12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
Grace is denial and resistance to ungodly living and worldly lusts and developing a serious mindset to do right and live Godly in this present world.
Spiritual growth results in living a separated life unto God, with a goal of patterning one’s life after the life of Christ. It is not a freedom to live according to one’s own desires and lusts.
As we learn that Christ is holy, just, without guile, merciful, longsuffering, full of grace and truth, so we learn what our lives should look like on an every day basis.
What do you know about Christ? Have you studied his life in the Gospels? Where in the last couple of months has your life conformed to the image of Christ? What commitments and pursuits did Christ make in his life?
Spiritual growth must have as its end goals personal separation from the world (grace in action), and becoming like Jesus Christ (learning of him in order to live like him).
Romans 8:29 (KJV)
29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
