Today, in America, we are living in perilous times. Times in which men and women are filled with the fruits of selfishness. Below the Scriptures shed light on how living for self is flushed out in so many ways. Today personal and policical, and even religious decisions in churches are being made across our country that are bent on fulfilling and passifying the pleasure of man and denying the purity of God, yet some still try to claim the title “Christian.” God clearly identifies this as a form of godliness. True believers are to turn away from this lifestyle.
2 Timothy 3:1-5
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
Today, many Christians living in these times go along with the flow. From children being disobedient to parents, to generations who have become unthankful, to false accusers who love to slander others via the web, these are just some of the fruits of 2 Timothy 3. All of the fruits mentioned are abundant in our world today, but even worse they are abundant in the lives of Christians.
In these times, believers must be men and women of understanding. Issachar transferred to his children an understanding of the times, so that they would know what to do.
1 Chronicles 12:32
And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.
11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
Knowing that we are living in perilous times demands that we first wake up. Some are sleeping spiritually. They have left behind attending a Bible-believing, Bible preaching church. Some have let the Scriptures sit on the shelf too long. Others have coasted and almost been rocked to sleep by functioning daily without God, without prayer, without thinking that God is with you as a Christian every moment of every day. Knowing the time should cause us to wake up.
Living with works of darkness is wasting a life. Paul instructs those who know the time to clean up. We need to relinquish the worldly garments of sin, and rioting, and drinking, and the sins of the spirit. As a believer, it is urgent that you cast off the works of darkness. The choice of confessing and forsaking sin is life’s greatest choice other than receiving Christ. Knowing the time, believers in Christ must make purity a priority. What is defiling your heart and your soul? What sin in your life are you ashamed of? What work of darkness needs to be cast off.
1 John 3:3
And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
One who understands the times, knows that it’s time to dress up. The clear instruction in Romans 13:12 is to put on the armour of light. These times in our nation demand that Christians be armed. The light we arm ourselves with is not a hateful spirit, or a hopeless attitude, but rather a thorough knowledge of the Word of God. This “armour of light” will keep a Christian on the right path when there are so many diversions. This “armour of light” will protect him from false teachings and error. This “armour of light” will be a radiant testimony of Christ to others around him. This “armour of light” is ultimately putting on Jesus Christ who is the light of the world.
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Knowing the time demands action on the part of all true Christians (Christ followers). It is urgent that we wake up, clean up, and dress up. May I encourage you to take your Bible off the shelf, get up on Sunday and come to church and grow again in your knowledge of the Scripture. We invite you to join us @ Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
