Little Things That Make a Big Difference – “Little Folly”

Proverbs 22:1 (KJV)
1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

It takes years to build a good reputation and only a little folly to tear a good reputation apart.

While a good name is rather to be chosen that great riches, indicating the value of a good name, “a little folly” can take that which is precious, that which is a wonderful fragrance in a person’s life and cause it to stink in the nostrils of others. What a great warning to heed in your life that little choices have big impacts. What a vivid word picture that is portrayed in the verse below.

Ecclesiastes 10:1 (KJV)
1 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.

Proverbs 27:9 (KJV)
9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.

Often we find in the Bible ointment was associated with rejoicing and joy while flies in the ointment speak of something that pollutes all the wisdom and honour in someone’s life. Flies in the ointment or “a little folly” replace joy with guilt. This is a bad trade.

A little folly could be just a moment of folly. It is interesting that folly erases wisdom and honour.

It’s a little silliness, a little foolishness, a little letting of your guard down that will ruin your name as a Christian, as a man or woman of integrity, as a family member with a good family name. Beware of justifying a little foolishness in your life. Oh the stain that a little follow brings upon a life.

A little indecent behavior, a little distasteful speech can puncture that which a person has built up in the way of a good name for years.

A thoughtless word, an offense committed against someone else can forever mar one’s honourable reputation.

An attending of a wrong party, being at the wrong place at the wrong time, a curiosity to visit a chat room or a dating site can all lead to a little folly in one’s life. Dear saint, to keep a good name remember the great verse in 1 Peter 5:8.

1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Lord, please help me to be alert and to apply this simple Bible principle in my life today.
