Sins

Sins That Are Overlooked – Part 2

1 John 2:15 (KJV)
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

In this series of sins that are overlooked, it is important that we understand that we often overlook or minimize certain sins and therefore do not address these sins in our lives.

Sometimes, we do not categorize them as sin. We may qualify them as a weakness or struggle, but often these sins dig in and take root in our hearts without ever being confessed or forsaken. Sins that are overlooked often become acceptable in our lives and we try to co-exist with them, while they bring great damage to our heart.

The sin of loving the world and the things of the world is a direct violation of a command we find in Scripture. Dr. Jeremiah Mitchell said, “worldliness is becoming comfortable under the curse.” This is illustrated in the life of Lot, who eventually became so comfortable in Sodom that he had to be escorted out of Sodom.

What part of the world have you become comfortable with – It’s language? It’s music? It’s entertainment? It’s priorities? It’s materialism? It’s beliefs? It’s view of truth? It’s fashions?

Instead of separating from the world and it system, and its values, and its fashions, worldly Christians living in the sin of loving the world, follow the course of this world. For the believer this kind of lifestyle is to be a thing of the past.

Ephesians 2:2 (KJV)
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

This friendship and love of the world puts a believer at enmity with God.

James 4:4 (KJV)
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Personal convictions and standards then are barriers that keep me from growing in my love for the world, and protect and reveal my love for God. It is vital that we understand there is a great battle over a Christian’s love life. Communication builds love in a relationship. Is it possible that your love for the world is growing, and your communication with God is decreasing?

Just as someone who becomes unfaithful to his mate grows another love in his life to the erosion of his love for his wife, so it is when the overlooked sin of love for the world causes us to fade in our love for God.

If the Spirit reveals a love for the world or the things of the world in any way, don’t overlook it. It’s God’s faithfulness to reveal sin in your life, so that you can confess it and forsake it and have a pure heart, growing in love for God

James 4:7-8 (KJV)
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
