Tools for Spiritual Battle – Tool #2 – Humility, Submission, and Resistance

Everyday a believer in Christ awakes, he awakes to spiritual battle – battle between the flesh and spirit, wrestling against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, spiritual wickedness in high places. Battles requires firepower, armour, weapons, tools at your disposal to fight. If you are going to utilize the tools God has given you for spiritual warfare, then you must develop a battle mentality meaning that you take on the application of 1 Peter 5:8. This mentality must be a daily mentality that you acquire and add to it the tools that God provides for this battle.

1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

James 4:6-8 (KJV)
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

In battle, blood can be shed, and the enemy defeated, but how much better if the enemy retreats. In James 4:6-7, the Holy Spirit combines humility, submission, and resistance as being a tool that will cause the enemy to retreat, to flee.

Consistent yielding our members of our body, our mind and thoughts, our affections and appetites to God while yielding nothing to the enemy in a spirit of humility is a powerful step forward spiritually.

Barnes said, “No one is safe who yields in the least to the suggestions of the tempter; there is no one who is not safe if he does not yield.” The believer totally yielded to God is a believer that Satan has no victory over. The strongest resistance a believer can manifest is total surrender to the Saviour? How about you? In the battle, do you find yourself feeling defeated, battered, engaged, but losing daily battles to temptation, to discouragement and depression? Pick up and learn how to use this power tool in the Christian life. This must be a tool that we learn to use repeatedly in our daily battles.

When you are facing the battle in the mind, or extreme temptation, yield yourself afresh to God. God I yield myself to you. Who do you want me to serve today? Who might I encourage today? Is there someone you would lay on my heart to witness to today? Lord, I yield my hands, my eyes, my feet, my ears to you. This totally diffuses the enemy’s goal of getting you to fall.

1 Peter 5:8-9 (KJV)
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

James 4:6-8 and 1 Peter 5:8-9 are worthy of your meditation, memorization, and implementation. They are tools given to you and me by the Spirit to not only help us to be aware of spiritual battle, but to win those battles. My prayer is that those who read this will find spiritual understanding to utilize the tool that I have introduced today from God’s Word.
