It is one thing to go into spiritual battle with low morale, it is quite another thing to face your battles with spiritual confidence and focus. The strategy used by King Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20 reveals another tool that believers can use on a daily basis as they face their spiritual battles.
2 Chronicles 20:21-22 (KJV)
21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.
22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.
What a wise move by King Jehoshaphat! He decided to put the singers up front before the army. In my minds eye, I am picturing a choir so to speak in the front with the soldiers behind them singing something like “Onward Christian Soldiers.” The whole purpose was to lead with praise. The whole purpose was to generate confidence and focus on God’s mercy as they faced the battle ahead. They were praising God for victory that had not happened yet! What great faith! Faith in God’s promises was Israel’s most effective weapon. This was not a common war tactic or strategy in attacking the enemy, but when God is honored, He will do wonders for you. God’s deliverance was unusual as the enemy ended up destroying each other! Notice, that when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD moved in a mighty way! Matthew Henry said, When they did but begin the work of praise God perfected the work of their deliverance.
Each day you wake up, you have no idea what spiritual warfare you will face for the day, but you can set your heart on praising God and singing praises to Him to begin your day. May I encourage you as you awake in the morning to immediately praise God for His mercy, for His grace, for His longsuffering, For His power, and the list can go on and on. Get a hymn on your heart and begin singing it unto the Lord to start your day. What a great battle strategy to develop!
