Tools for Spiritual Battle – Tool #8 – Whom Resist Steadfast in the Faith

1 Peter 5:8-9 (KJV)
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

The spiritual battle Christian face every day is against a relentless, powerful, intelligent enemy. To blow the adversary the devil off, is not a wise strategy in spiritual battle. Have you ever been caught off guard before? Maybe someone surprised you with a gift or a birthday party. Maybe you heard someone say something that you caught you off guard. To be caught off guard in regards to spiritual battle is a catastrophe. Peter warns believers to be sober and vigilant. He instructs believers that they must live their Christian lives with heightened awareness and alertness because the threat believers face every day is real and dangerous. In this spiritual battle, the enemy is not out to play or just threaten, but to actually devour. The enemy is not passive or content to live without capturing His prey. He is aggressive, active, and focused. While Satan cannot destroy a believer’s salvation, he can destroy his testimony, steal his joy, and blow his light out.

With this at the forefront of a believer’s mind, a specific tool is given in the midst of spiritual battle in v. 9 – “Whom Resist Stedfast in the Faith”. Just because you are aware of the enemy does not mean he is going to turn and run in the opposite direction. Being sober and vigilant is necessary if you are going to resist the enemy. Here the tool is to stand against the enemy, refusing to yield to his intentions, his imaginations, and temptations. Be solid, not wishy washy in battle. Don’t run, but rather fight in the faith.

1 Timothy 6:12 (KJV)
12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

There are time where there is no where to run and hide, or retreat, and the only tool left is to fight, to resist, to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Ephesians 6:10-14 (KJV)
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

In this great chapter on the armor of God, notice the warfare terminology Paul employs when describing spiritual warfare: (“stand against”, “wrestle”, “withstand”, “to stand”, “Stand therefore”). Much of winning the battle is simply related to standing, resisting, wrestling. Christian are you in retreat mode spiritually? Have you yielded a place to the enemy by yielding to sins of the spirit or flesh in your life? Have you given up in the fight? Have you been defeated over and over? Be challenged today to begin resisting enemy and being stedfast in your faith. Refuse his temptations, Fight off his lies, ignore his allurements, resist his wiles aimed to ignite a wrong spirit in your heart. It is high time you stand and resist your adversary!
